We surprised this black backed jackal (Canis aureus) while on a morning game drive. It was in very close proximity just off the road and lay dead still just long enough for me to fire off a couple shots before it bolted.

Comparable in size to a coyote, they are an incredibly adaptable and capable little hunter and possess reflexes as fast as lightning. In fact they’re fast enough that if you’re lucky enough to see them hovering around a lion kill, you may see them dart in and snatch a morsel right out from under the noses of the lions!

Although Canadian by birth, I grew up in Africa and from an early age travel became a regular part of my life. As a result I developed an early passion for my two great loves, Africa and aviation. Being fortunate to return to Africa every year with our own safari company “Explorations Africa”, all of my photos of wildlife are taken in their natural and unstaged settings.
