The most colourful and striking of all the eagles in the southern African region, the bateleur eagle (Terathopius ecaudatus) is hard to miss. The striking reds and yellows of the beak and facial area are still in the developmental stage so this juvenile has a ways to go before he sports the full adult colouration.

Bateleur are typically the first bird of prey to identify fresh carrion. They have a preference for the eyes and tongue and it is once these body parts have been extracted that vultures are able to identify from the air that the animal is indeed dead and ready to be feasted on.

Although Canadian by birth, I grew up in Africa and from an early age travel became a regular part of my life. As a result I developed an early passion for my two great loves, Africa and aviation. Being fortunate to return to Africa every year with our own safari company “Explorations Africa”, all of my photos of wildlife are taken in their natural and unstaged settings. • Thanks Tony! I was really chuffed with this one. It was so close and so cooperative….it was a real pleasure just being able to shoot in such great light.
