Artist's Description

This poor porcupine (Hystrix cristata) had the distinct misfortune of running across a lioness skilled in the very particular art of killing porcupine. Despite the massive size and strength advantage that lions (Panthera leo) possess over the porcupine, these little nocturnal animals generally fair well enough when they encounter lions. Young lions in particular are extremely curious but they learn really quickly to avoid the painful quills. A few lions however have succesfully learnt the art of flipping the porcupines over while avoiding the quills. Those who don’t quite get the knack of it will have to contend at best with festering wounds, at worst with a long slow death.

This particular lioness had come across this porcupine just before sundown as the pride prepared to head off on the hunt and she wasn’t in any mood to be sharing!
