Artist's Description

Elephant (Loxodonta africana) social units consist of closely related adult females and their young. Elephant calves are well cared for not only by attentive mothers, but also by the other female adults and adolescents of the herd.

Due to extremely dry conditions in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, large elephant herds of various family groups were congregating at ever diminishing waterholes and so calves could easily become seperated in the throng if they became distracted and didn’t keep up. Mothers had their hands full as they tried to navigate the rules of elephant etiquette, giving up drinking rights at the water to family groups of higher ranking as they arrived and the need of the calves for time and space to romp and play.
