Artist's Description

When it’s time for a lioness to give birth to her cubs, she does so in solitude and will seperate herself from the pride for a period of at least 6 weeks. Having been robbed of the protection afforded by the pride, she must be extremely careful that her cubs remain well concealed so that they don’t fall victim to other predators that might happen upon them. For this reason it’s a highly unusual treat to be priviledged to see young cubs of six weeks or less out in the open.

We came across this lioness (Panthera leo) as she was in the process of relocating her litter to another secure hideout.

South Luangwa National Park, Zambia
