There is an eerie quality in the stare of a leopard ( Panthera pardus) that can be totally unnerving. Arguably the most succesful of the big African cats, it is an opportunist par excelance. Always on a sharp look out for unsuspecting prey, it also keeps a wary vigil in order to avoid it’s aggresive carnivarous rivals, namely the lion and hyena. Nothing misses the sharp attention of the leopard and despite the fact that a body of water lay between him and us, there still was a sense of dread when he cast a long searching stare in our direction.

South Luangwa National Park in Zambia is renowned for it’s leopards and true to form, they certainly did not disappoint!

Although Canadian by birth, I grew up in Africa and from an early age travel became a regular part of my life. As a result I developed an early passion for my two great loves, Africa and aviation. Being fortunate to return to Africa every year with our own safari company “Explorations Africa”, all of my photos of wildlife are taken in their natural and unstaged settings.
