Having come across a pride of lions (panthera leo) feeding on a fresh giraffe kill the previous evening, we decided to return the next morning to watch the proceedings in the light of day. By the time we arrived the next morning, the other members of the pride had moved off a little distance and were lolling fat bellied and satiated in the shade, and this lioness was feeding alone and undisturbed on the carcass. From the evidence of her very worn teeth, this old girl was definitely long in the tooth and not as able to compete in the wild frenzy of communal feeding and fighting associated with a prides shocking lack of table manners and finesse at the dinner table!

Although Canadian by birth, I grew up in Africa and from an early age travel became a regular part of my life. As a result I developed an early passion for my two great loves, Africa and aviation. Being fortunate to return to Africa every year with our own safari company “Explorations Africa”, all of my photos of wildlife are taken in their natural and unstaged settings. she looks to have been in a scrabble or two as well, judging by the scars on her face… a splendid shot of this aging lioness at the table, and wonderful notes as always Dan

  • You do know that I write my notes just for you surely! She’s definitely been around the block, that’s for sure! I was amazed at how tolerant she was of us, although every once in a while she would look over at us as if to say…nothing better to do than watch me eat?…get a life!!!!
