Night visitor by Explorations Africa Dan MacKenzie

Being both a nocturnal and primarily arboreal carnivore, the Large-spotted Genet, or alternately Cape Genet (Genetta tigrina), is a treat to see up close and personal. Having just enjoyed the fading light of a glorious sunset, and lingering on the veranda to absorb the peaceful onset of another African night in the bush, it was such a treat to have this beautiful female drop down into view. She was evidently hoping for some scraps from the table and so lingered on the fringes of the faint circle of light cast by the porch light into the growing darkness. She had obviously become quite used to human presence, as at one point she approached to within about 2 meters, looking and hoping for any morsel that might make her noctornal foragings a little easier.

Although Canadian by birth, I grew up in Africa and from an early age travel became a regular part of my life. As a result I developed an early passion for my two great loves, Africa and aviation. Being fortunate to return to Africa every year with our own safari company “Explorations Africa”, all of my photos of wildlife are taken in their natural and unstaged settings. Please visit us at

Well I have never seen this animal. What an amazing mix .. sort of a cross between a cat, rat, and o’possum! beautiful spotted coat and how about that loooooooooooong tail :)

  • LOL…I love your description Carol. I’ve never found them too easy to find or photograph, so it was a real treat to spend about 30 minutes with her.

this is awesome. I’m wondering if she might have had young to feed at the time (if you look either side of the right front leg (our left)). That may have made her even more bold when looking for food. Regardless, this is pretty damn special

  • Thanks Chris! I’m sure she was feeding young and would have to agree that her boldness probably was related to her greater need for food. In the other close up of a genet that I’ve posted, I know that she was indeed feeding young and that had enboldended her to become a nightly visitor at the lodge at supper time.
