While visiting Mkuze Falls private reserve in South Africa, I had the fantastic priviledge of being taken out on my own by the ranger and tracker. We came across this female Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) and her 3 cubs enjoying the last light of day together, and for close to 45 minutes, she extended us the priviledge of sharing a little slice of her families life together. I think what amazed me most was the constant vigilance. Not for a moment did she seem to drop her guard or become unnecessarily distracted, her sole purpose being the care and protection of her young family.

Mkuze Falls reserve, South Africa

Although Canadian by birth, I grew up in Africa and from an early age travel became a regular part of my life. As a result I developed an early passion for my two great loves, Africa and aviation. Being fortunate to return to Africa every year with our own safari company “Explorations Africa”, all of my photos of wildlife are taken in their natural and unstaged settings. Another beauty, a wonderful time of day. I’d love to see a close-up of just the mother, as well, with that incredible vigilant, watchful posture….. C

  • Well I think we can do that !….mother alone will be showing up shortly =)

Great shot Dan. How close did you get to them?

  • Thanks Chris. We were about 20 – 30 meters if I remember correctly. They had parked themselves up on an embankment, which we were able to pull up to fairly closely.

Most of your shots (like this one) speak straight to the heart.
    Keep it up!

  • Thanks so much for the encouragement! Much appreciated
