Hyena (Crocuta crocuta) certainly don’t typically take the cake in the beauty sweepstakes. There is however, something incredibly fascinating and attractive about these amazingly powerful and social predators. This clan of hyenas had convenienty taken up temporary residence in a culvert just off the road as a good denning area, offering fantastic opportunities for intimate observation. Mom couldn’t have cared less, but junior just had to check out the new neighbors.

Although Canadian by birth, I grew up in Africa and from an early age travel became a regular part of my life. As a result I developed an early passion for my two great loves, Africa and aviation. Being fortunate to return to Africa every year with our own safari company “Explorations Africa”, all of my photos of wildlife are taken in their natural and unstaged settings. Please visit us at

Oh, how sweet this little guy is! What a terrific shot showing the bond.

  • Have to admit that taking a cuddly shot of a Hyena hasn’t ever been the shot I associate with these animals…however the interaction between these two just made it sooooooooo easy! Thanks
