Black rhino - Imfolozi, South Africa by

Having the opportunity to enjoy a black rhino (Diceros bicornis) in such close proximity was cerrtainly a unique experience. Generally a shy and nocturnal mammal, they prefer the cover of dense bush and darkness. This calf and it’s mother however, were amazingly relaxed as they browsed in open view, walking to within a short distance of my vehicle.

Highly endangered and generally elusive, they rely heavily on their very acute senses of smell and hearing to stay out of harms way. This young calf however, will face life with an added challenge – it was apparently born without ears.

Although Canadian by birth, I grew up in Africa and from an early age travel became a regular part of my life. As a result I developed an early passion for my two great loves, Africa and aviation. Being fortunate to return to Africa every year with our own safari company “Explorations Africa”, all of my photos of wildlife are taken in their natural and unstaged settings. They look like such left-over dinosaurs, but somehow cute in this shot, chomping on the (prickly!) bush.

Wonderful detailed portrait, great work Dan!

  • Thanks so much Konstantinos. It was a rare priviledge to enjoy this calf and mother at such close quarters presenting themselves in such a relaxed manner in such an uncharacteristically open area.
