Often reviled because of their inclination to savour the dead remains of anything they can sink their teeth into, the hyena (Crocuta crocuta) is actually a fascinating piece of the ecological puzzle that makes the bush so enchanting. With insanely powerful jaws and incredibly strong stomach juices, they are capable of handling the most rancid of carcasses, with the salivating jaws being somewhat of a trademark look.

Kruger National Park, South Africa

Although Canadian by birth, I grew up in Africa and from an early age travel became a regular part of my life. As a result I developed an early passion for my two great loves, Africa and aviation. Being fortunate to return to Africa every year with our own safari company “Explorations Africa”, all of my photos of wildlife are taken in their natural and unstaged settings. Great capture Dan, even though not the world’s prettiest animal!!!!!

  • Thanks very much Karine! It’s true they’re not the most beautiful, but I find them incredibly fascinating, warts and all.
