Rose
Mixed Media on Reeves BFK.
Oil pastel, colored ink (this was before I had discovered liquid acrylic.) colored pencil, some collage. (Mostly inside of the chain.)
This piece is about reality. The small figure inside of the chain represents a person looking at the world. The chains represent the things that bind us-whatever those might be. (Certain ideas, restrictions of money, time, location, physical and mental disabilities, in some case lack of faith/unbelief in something.) The world inside of the chain is split in two-half sombre, half full of promise, color and life. The tree is hope, which stretches beyond the limits of the chain.
Beyond the limited world is another reality. Some of it is gritty and broken, the sadness of fall, the reality of sorrow and pain. But there is hope also. The pink-golden rose is a reality that defies even the brokeness of this life.
My faith tells me that God is “beautiful” but I have never seen him. So often life seems to be nothing but a multi-layered collage of confusion, lonliness, and pain. There is beauty, but there is often sorrow also. But occasionally, beyond the layers, there is a glimmer of beauty so great that it indicates something beyond.
