“I saw the angel in the marble and I carved until I set him free”
– Michelangelo

The Dream was the first painting that I had completed from a vision.

Painting The Dream was a very interesting process for me. I was concerned how others would react to a non-Aboriginal person using a style normally synonymous with Aboriginal art, i.e. dot painting. For this reason, when it was completed, I was hesitant to show it to anyone for some years.

In November 1999 I succumbed and included The Dream, along with The Awakening, in a Sacred Art exhibition that featured six local artists.

The exhibition began with a special welcoming ceremony performed by the Aboriginal Elders of the region. Afterwards, the Aboriginal Elders approached me and asked questions about my visions and paintings. They said they liked my work. I was so happy and relieved to hear that.

Local dignitaries, including the Governor of South Australia, Sir Erik Neal, attended the public opening. To my surprise Sir Erik Neal invited me to display The Dream at Government House (his official residence) for six months to which I agreed. After the exhibition, The Dream featured in the main boardroom of Government House to be viewed by visitors from all over the world.

The story of The Dream is about the creation of our universe. The snake (Rainbow Serpent) represents the Creator. The centre shows the creation of our universe, with the hands representing the creation of spirits in all dimensions and the eggs, the creation of life.

The greens and browns represent land and all things that live on the land. The shades of blue and purple represent water and all creatures that live in water. The branches and red berries represent nourishment and sustenance.
At this stage in the story, Creation is not complete; hence the black (unfilled) background at two corners.

The Rainbow Serpent has entered a sleep state and has begun dreaming our future.

The Dream is the first of a series showing the transition of the universe from Creation to enlightenment. The next of the series is The Awakening.

I studied aboriginal art at uni and you really have handled the technique well, there is great passion and attention to detail evident and like some great Indigenous art of this style there is a movement that comes out when you look at the dotting and great symbolic work. Do you think the vision came from a previous life? beautiful work

Maya, this painting says it all. It is the perfect shamanic representation of Creation. It speaks to me on a very deep level. You know it doesn’t matter what race you are. If you are a shaman, then that is what you are and you can’t do anything about it. Let it be free, you are bringing something from the Spirit into the Physical. It is a service to humankind. Thank you.

I have seen this work a few times now, but didn’t comment. I guess I needed to be in sync with this beautiful and so symbolic piece of art. symbolism is such a big part of our lives, yet not readily recognized by most of us.

I like this art creation of yours from at least two points of view (one for each eye): first, it speaks directly to my sense of beauty in the langauge of beautiful and harmonious colours; secondly, its symbolism is more universal in representation, than just that of the local aboriginal people, which makes me ponder over our very roots as human beings.

It is very pleasing to my heart and to my mind, and for this alone, it is a big hit with me.
Bravo Maya and bravo to your inspiration guides.

    Beautiful abstract, Pointilist technique?

  • Maya - replied

Thanks. Dottism??? is there such a word? It is a dot painting using the technique of the aboriginal artists, however, instead of using sticks etc to make the dots I used a brush.
