Originally the Harrow Inn and renamed early in the 20th Century by Elliot Downs Till when he purchased it. Downs Till was a local character who got in trouble with the clergy as he limited his customers alcohol at the hotel. He took down the decaying village stocks which had been an unpopular item at Bower Lane since a local man died in them in 1838. When he erected some new ones and protected them with a fence the villages burnt them down. He died in 1917 aged 82 and the church lychgate was erected in his memory. Some turn around!
