Now abandoned on Chapel Bank, near Appledore, Kent a number of headstones silently recall their incumbents.

Chapel Bank used to be the Isle Of Ebony and a church stood on this spot until during Elizabeth I’s reign it was strcuk by lightning. It was rebuilt as a chapel and survived until 1858 when it was moved stone by stone to the more accessable site at Reading Street at the bottom of the hill and rebuilt.

This one is one of the most legible despite being one of the oldest

“In memory of Jane, wife of Henry POILE of this parish who died 12 May 1789 aged 53 years. Left issue Henry, Jane, James, John-Seers, Elizabeth, Judith and Charles.” An epitaph reads: My kindred and best friends adieu / Death calls I leave the world and you / Let youth their footsteps guide with care / Since death nor youth nor age will spare / Ye then sincere and good and just / In your dear redeemer trust.

5 exposure HDR from single RAW file shot on a Canon EOS1000D and processed in sepia in PS8.
