Altar at St Mary The Virgin, Bradbourne. by

Unusually the altar at Bradbourne in Kent is also a tomb.

Bearing the arms of members of the Scott family who lived in the area between 1290 and 1594. The Scott’s were a very influential family during their time and held various positions of great influence under the King or Queen of the time.

The sculpture was completed around 1610 and is actually empty although believed designed to be a memorial to either Thomas Scott died 1594 or Reginald Scott died 1599 and wrote books about witchcraft.

The quotes on it are from the Great Bible of 1539 and and the Geneva Bible of 1560 and therebby pre-dating the now adopted Bible of King James.
