Buittle Church by Ray Vaughan

Currently unavailable for purchase

Buittle Parish Church, built ca. 1819, eastern Kirkcudbrightshire near Castle Douglas. Behind it, in the churchyard, are the walls of the earlier church. Photo taken 1 June 2007.

My great-great-great-great-grandfather John Dalzell, after having worked as a miller in Ulverston (formerly Lancashire, now Cumbria) and elsewhere, spent the last years of his life in Buittle Parish at the farm known as Little Knox. He died at Little Knox on 2 September 1822. On Sunday 13 October 1822, an Edict directed at those having an interest in John’s estate was proclaimed and read here at Buittle Parish Church, and a copy of the Edict was affixed to the church door. See Kirkcudbright Commissary Court record CC13/6/128, pages 5441-44; also CC 13/4/3, pages 233-34. John Dalzell is buried at Dundrennan Abbey with his wife/widow Dorothy (Tyson) Dalzell and two of their sons.
