Acrylic plus glass on canvas, 18 × 24 inches.
There is often something relaxing and meditative about a soft steady rain. The off-rhythmic sounds, blurring of the scenery, change in the color of surfaces, sky, ripples on the water combine to create a cocoon feeling.
Rain was created using acrylic washes in a watercolor technique to lay in the background. Semitransparent gel glazes were layered onto the background using textural painting brush techniques. The horizontal water and sky features were created using tinted acrylic gel media, poured and lightly brushed to spread it. partially mixing different tints prior to pouring creates swirling effects in the thick gel glazes. Glass beads were sprinkled onto the thick gel glaze while wet, and gently pressed into the gel layer to set and adhere them.
This approach creates a painting with a great deal of color depth, almost like fused colored glass. The tops of the glass beads stick out of the glaze and their curved surfaces act like many tiny lenses – catching the light and projecting it at odd angles that move with the viewer. They also sparkle.
