Acrylic with glass on canvas. Higher resolution photo coming after the snowstorm leaves (and I hope before any more arrive).
By the beautiful Sea looks like a seascape from far away, but with a strangely frilly aspect. Up close, the unusual construction of the painting shows through, rather like a jelly version of a wedding cake.
The “sea” is built up in tinted transparent layers with the base painted in using a dry (ish) brush). Tinted clear gel was extruded through a pastry bag to create the horizontal textured waves. Tiny glass spheres were used to coat the extruded gel ribbons. More tinted media was poured and swirled over the extruded raised features. Swirling white paint and the 3-D texture of the extruded acrylic gels create the illusion of breaking waves and seafoam. At the bottom of the painting, mica flakes knifed into white and ochre paint create a textured rocky sand effect. A thick layer of clear gel was applied over the mica texture and splashed with fine dry sand. the sand obscures the mica sort of like pebbled glass and creates a nice effect.
