Friends taking an Autumn stroll on the paved road!

As I rounded a curve and a small hill I encountered a palomino horse and a little dog taking a casual stroll down the middle for the road, needless to say, I made a sudden STOP! They just trotted down the road ahead of me for quite a long distance and then stepped off to the side of the road as I slowly passed by. The horse began enjoying the fresh patches of green grass aside the road. The little dog, his obvious pal and escape partner, simply sat down while his friend had a green lunch and patiently waited to resume their “freedom jaunt” once again!

I stopped at a farm about 1/4 mile down the road to ask if the two belonged there but no one was home. I drove on and stopped again at another horse ranch two miles further on the road. The critters belonged to the farm where I had first stopped I was told by a worker there. Turning around and heading back towards the farm it had been over an hour by now, I at first did not see them on or near the road as before, then I passed by a small dirt lane leading uphill to a hugh pasture and there was the little dog sitting high upon a bank looking off towards the pastures. I stopped and looked closer, his friend , the horse , was slowly making his way back to the fenced area he had escaped from!

One could say, their day’s walk and sightseeing had come to an end and they were returning home! They were a bonded pair and their friendship was very evident! I drove on, feeling good, they were again safe!

Wow! Wonder where they where heading…reminds of The Littlest Hobbo, but with a dog and horse! Very sweet!

  • Ruth Lambert replied

I’M SURE THEY WERE JUST SIGHTSEEING-- I did see a hole the fence a few yards down the road after I passed! Teh funny thing was the dog-- it was so protective of the horse-like he was guarding him-- he would sit and watch while the horse grazed and run along side whent eh horse decided to move on—- I was there for about 30 minutes before I got passed them! Actually it was fun to watch them! :)

Congratulations Ruth and our “unknown” pals for being Featured Rescue Pets.
Often forgotten are the ones that need our help for a brief moment in time. While we may not end up taking them home with us, or delivering them to the safety of a shelter taking the time to help them find their way safely home is to be commended.
Beautiful shot and well done! xo

  • Ruth Lambert replied

Believe me when I say--this venture was MY pleasure! I enjoyed watching these two interact-- buddies for sure!!! I would have loved to take them both home with me-however, I could not accomadate one of them let alone the two! I am making another trip back to that road this week—i want to see if my new friends are still around the neighborhood!!!! They were both very friendly!!
    THANK YOU FOR THIS FEATURE!!!

Very nice Ruth.. Its beautiful. iF he is like our shepard then he knows they are not allowed off the property. The dog also goes on trail rides with us so he is probably watching him and wondering why no rider. Thank God They didnt get hurt and the horse returned. if it was not for his dog friend he may have ventured into the woods to never return.. Thank god for friend ship. or just a good watch dog.. LOL

  • Ruth Lambert replied

Hi Sherry! Truthfully-—I think the little dog finally led that horse back to the pasture where he got out! When I went back to find them after learning where they belonged-- the little dog was already sitting atop the hill in the pasture—but the horse was still wroking his way back the dirt lane to the pasture-- I think the dog led him back!!! It was a great ejoyable time --- for me-and I guess for them as well—they just took a stroll down the road!!!!

  • Sherry Osborn

    Sherry Osborn

yea.. thats what I was trying to say,, they herd them back.. We use are dogs for the cows to. so believe me the horses know ,,they just dont run, the dog is no threat to them,, the dog always is in front of our horses so they probably figure to follow… They also watch the dogs chase the cows so maybe they figured it better to follow then to be chased..

... just read your story … that’s soooo cool!!! I had a similar circumstance a few years back. Rich, my son, was still riding at that time and was VERY good with horses. We live kind of out in the country, but the road I was on is very heavily traveled. Just as you said, we rounded a corner and there … on the WRONG side of the fence beside the road … between the road and the paddock … was a gorgeous horse. Immediately I turned around, dropped Rich off so that he could make sure the horse didn’t get into the road, and drove up to the nearby house. Thank heaven someone was home … she came right out and got the horse from Rich and got him back into safety!!! YOU did a good deed, honey … and got a GREAT shot out of it for your troubles, too!! I love the bit about the horse’s best friend, the dog!!!! What a cool, cool story!!!!!

  • Ruth Lambert replied

Thank you Lois!!! i’m so glad it brightened your day! lol

    hi lesley!
I am so blessed that this photo and true story has touched the hearts of many! I have been back several times however, I have not seen them again but I would suppose they are being housed indooors for the winter! Perhaps in the Spring I will find them once again! If so—- you can bet on it—there will be a sequel to the story!! Blessings to you dear!

This is so cute. We used to have a palomino that would escape with an old mare from time to time. Usually they are just looking for the nearest grass or corn field. It pays to travel with your camera! Great shot!

  • Ruth Lambert replied

Yes, they were looking or the horse was looking for better grazing ground and stopped often to nibble a few blades of green, the dog….well he just layed down and waited!! lol sooo cute!

  • Lisawv

    Lisawv

What a great capture! Read the story behind the photo and what a neat pair.

  • Ruth Lambert replied

Perhaps, since Spring has arrived here I will see these two once again in my travels. I know I will be looking for them in that same area as I drive thru! Who knows what the next segment will entail!!!
Thanks for your view and read!
