The last time Ruth Joyce painted a pretty doggy she was 12 years old. And the dog was in fact quite fat and drooly, therefore wasn’t that pretty at all. Seeing for herself little point in such work, she turned her attention to the sort of art she does now; punk music, passion, skating, bmxing, love, determination, surfing, snowboarding, ferocity, youth and spirit. Her characters are extremely dark and unusual, but their vibrancy gives them an edge you don’t often see. The girls are awesomely powerful, and the guys fiendishly energetic. This isn’t just stuff for the young, but more for those young at heart.
