Baschka (in Croatia)

On a scorching Sunday summer’s afternoon, to the distant eye, the beach of Baschka is reminiscent of an impressionist painting. All one can see are dabs and dots of vibrant intermingling colors and, with the play of sunlight at the peak of day, it is easy to capture the essence of life and of the lives of the folk teeming the waterfront on that broiling afternoon.

Tanned figures boast their brightly patterned beachwear and motley caps; a rainbow palette of printed towels lie carelessly strewn across the smooth pebbled ocean bank; sun umbrellas poised in a medley of splendid colors, casting but mere shadows, govern the shore; and kaleidoscopic air mattresses sprinkle the seaside and dance flippantly atop the bouncy waves.

So too, from afar, the onlooker feels the listlessness of the strand guests escaping, not only the stifling heat, but also the hectic pace and stresses of weekday life and duties. Tension is released, problems forgotten, conflicts momentarily set aside. Life is, for the moment, blithe and simple.

In the prickling waters, young lovers entwine together unaware of discreet glances from nostalgic parents who secretly wish back to times of youth and insouciance. But, children relentlessly demand attention, and the parents, heed to their laughter, and cries, some with patience, some with reproach. The infants shriek and revel in the ocean sprays, busy themselves on the wet sandy shores, enthralled, delighted and one with the moment of now.

I love this place – Baschka.
