My Inner Brown Bear, Melbourne Zoo by

Photo of a poor, bored Brown Bear at the Melbourne Zoo . Taken on Friday’s RedBubble journey to the Zoo for our Inner Animal challenge.

If there’s one thing I’m taking home with me after our Zoo trip, it’s how sad it is taking photos of animals in Zoos like these. Some of these animals are clearly not enjoying themselves in any way trapped how they are – perhaps the Werribee Open Range Zoo would be nicer for them, but I just couldn’t get this out of my brain, so perhaps that’s why I’ve chosen one of the photos I took that was covered in fences and barriers.

Sometimes I feel like this bear, like there’s too much crap, like fences, conveniently positioned trees and barriers in between me and where I’d much rather be just enjoying other stuff and chasing tourists (ok – maybe not the tourist bit).

Thankfully, we don’t necessarily associate completely with an animal as the Brown Bear is known for eating both plant and animal material – my preference of course being the latter. But they do eat up to 15kg of it – which I’m all for. My hair is quite unkempt at the moment and I do tend to let my fingernails grow out of laziness, but I’m not sure whether I’ve reached the 5cm in length that these Rapter-like claws do. I’m also perfectly aligned with their abilities of only running in short bursts, having periods of lethargy and building up layers of fat to cope with the winter.

If, per chance, this is to come first in the challenge, my dosh will be going to: Mission in Action where my wife was volunteering over Christmas and where Chucky our sponsor child is!

Now that is a bit scary Russell!!! But to the winter bit, yes, I can relate to that!! Very amusing!! :)))

  • It was pretty cold when we were there mind you – so I don’t know what this fella was doing outside!

Zoos can be very sad places. The one I visited today just made me feel miserable.

I personally always fancy myself as something of a Bear when the cold weather sets in…. I love winter food & begin entertaining the thought of actually spending the entire season sleeping…..

  • Yes – very sad. Although, I can’t say I’d much rather meet a bear in the wild…

I bet ‘Bear Stand Up’ is a pretty dull affair.

  • Yogi, what are you doing today? “Yawning”, Fred – what about you? “Sleeping”, John? “I thought I’d have a doze”… yes, I agree.

Great photograph Russ, I think you need a hug.

  • Sure, as long as your fingernails aren’t 5cm long!

He looks so sad! This makes me feel sad. I think I need a hug… promise I’ll try not to break any glasses with my bum this time though ;)

No one with half a heart could fail to be moved by this image and your words.

  • The moment I saw you wrote the word hug I slowly moved all the glasses away – it’s all good. Thanks Rhana :)

Poor bugger, your words and image speak volumes.

  • yeah, it’s quite sad – he didn’t really move from that spot the entire time we were there. At least his friend was kickin’ back a bit an relaxing, but this guy was just staring :(
