Winner – Wide-Field category, David Malin Astrophotography Awards 2005.

Imaged during a brilliant all-sky auroral display on the 20th November 2003, Doune, Scotland. Rays of green and red auroral light diverge from a region of the sky overhead creating the likeness of an angel on the figure’s shoulder. The figure is a statue of Sir David Stirling DSO, founder of the British wartime Special Air Service (SAS).

Stars of many constellations such as, Orion, Perseus, Taurus, Pegasus and Cassiopeia shine through the aurora. Taken on Fuji Provia 400F slide film and digitised. Colours and textures have been carefully reproduced to match the visual appearance.

Amazing – intrigued that it’s Provia – lovely result. I was up having a holiday in Stirling around that time, as I recall – probably saw much the same display one evening.

Thanks PigleT. Small world! You chose a good time to holiday in Scotland, beautiful countryside around Stirling. Spectacular display. I found Provia 400F to be an excellent film for time exposure subjects. I’m pleased to say I eventually threw off the analogue mindset and now fully embrace the digital age!
