Characteristics:

  • Flowers pale yellow to straw-colored, six petals, hanging from stalk.
  • Leaves sessile (not surrounding stem), with pale undersides.
  • Fruit a triangular pod, hanging beneath stem.
  • Height: 6-13".

Natural History:

  • Flowers in late April and May.
  • Habitat: Deciduous forests at low elevation.
  • Range: Northeastern and central United States.
  • Native.

  • 18th-century botanist Manassah Cutler wrote in 1785 that “…the young shoots may be eaten as asparagus. The roots are nutritious, and are used in diet-drinks.”
