DIY Guitar Hero
For all those people who like me, have unfinished projects/kits piled up in their work room. This is a kit of a classic Gibson Les Paul that I bought a couple of years back. Intended as a nice little winter project, it’s never seen the light of day.

The tee as worn by Scott of S.B. MacDonald Custom Instruments check out his site here: www.customguitars.com

Cool design, but it reminds me of all my partners unfinished projects which frustrate the life out of me hee hee x

  • rubyred replied

It’s a boys prerogative to start, and never finish anything. Ebay must be full of half finished projects! ;)

    awesome deconstruction.

  • rubyred replied

Hehe, deconstruction? It’s never been constructed! I had great plans for a lovely custom paint job too…

    Maaate!

That’s Mark’s next guitar, although he’s just found a luthier in Adelaide who runs classes to literally build one from scratch – from a chunk of 4×2 up!!

I can only imagine the paint job you’d be able to give it!!

  • rubyred replied

I think my vision outweighs my talent when it comes to paint finishing ;(
I’d love to make one from scratch. It’s another art form isn’t it?

Stain and oil it, man. Didn’t know Gibson did the kit thing – at first glance, I assumed Warmoth or something.

I like the concept, by the way =)

  • rubyred

    rubyred

Nah, you’re right. It’s not a genuine Gibson. It’s pretty well made, could look the part though. But, it would probably play crap ;)

Wear your procrastination with pride roger ! Nicely laid out this, it’s not an easy thing to do.

  • rubyred replied

I’m just taking my time. So what if it’s taken over 2 years to decide what color to paint it. And you can’t upgrade the switches and buttons until you know what theme your working to, right? Haven’t begun to think about my pickup options yet… I’ll put it back in the shed.

  • Juilee Pryor

hey rubyred this is totally mad…. it looks like a packet of those little toys you get in kindersuprise or cornflakes or something and have to snap clear then put together…. it’s great…. I like it…..

  • rubyred replied

hehe, it does doesn’t it. If only it was that easy to put together, I may have finished it! Thanks for the comment Juilee ;)

you kill the bird, you kill the song, you kill the song, you kill the myth, you kill the myth, it’s all over charlie, get that guitar together buddy, and release the song.

  • rubyred replied

It needs to be made, So cruel keeping it in a box in bits.

I’ve got a Fender Jazzmaster body I cut from mahogany… just waiting for the pickups to be routed… it’s been waiting for over a year… I got lazy and borrowed a buddies Strat instead. Our guitars need to be made, wanna have a race to the finish?

  • rubyred replied

It would probably be a marathon rather than a sprint. I’d do a bit and then spend a few days (weeks) admiring it and dreaming of how it may turn out…

  • JohnThunderbird

    JohnThunderbird

I didn’t know they sold them as kits?

  • rubyred replied

Gibson don’t. It’s a lookelikey! It could be the reason why I haven’t finished it, because it probably won’t play that well.

  • JohnThunderbird

    JohnThunderbird

nooo, I got two guitars, an old 1970’s Vantage les paul copy, which I got for $200, it’s fretboard is so fast, that my luthier said it was better than a $2Grand Fender, my other, a PRS single cut, better pickups but just as fast. I don’t always go for names, especially in our consumer driven environment.

I’d love to see this done in the style of those plastic model kits (kinda like what Juilee said) where you snap them out then glue together and then paint (if you can be bothered) or put decals on it. Probably wouldn’t sound very good at all – but your design would probably look kick ass!

  • zomboy

    zomboy

well done. Another concept I have been playing around with is model kits (connected plastic parts) reminds me of this.

  • rubyred replied

Cheers zomboy, this was a bit of fun to do ;)

I love this RR, Just such a cool overall look.. Balanced and visually interesting

  • rubyred replied

Cheers Scott. I do like the pieces that make up a guitar. In isolation they’re quite abstract.

    Ah, that’s very cool.
I’ve built my own guitar, it’s incomplete but very close to being done. Made it from scratch however. When it got to the neck I began thinking ‘would have been much easier to buy this pre made’. I’m in love with guitar, and I’m in love with your shirt idea. Nice work.
At least you have spare parts now right :P

  • rubyred replied

It probably looks better left as is, Do you play the guitar?

  • rubyred replied

Some wouldn’t call it ‘playing’. One day I’d like to give it enough time to do it justice.
