Supplication
this write has the word fuck in it twice (ok three times counting this one), so if that bothers you, then stop right here…
i’m a story teller. i like to write anecdotal pieces that entertain or pull you along in my world. but today, at lunch i was feeling a little lost. So i shut the door to my office and started writing. But i couldn’t make anything flow, no stories wanted to be told. So i just started writing sentences down and really, i didn’t pay much attention to them, i was just trying to get my brain in gear. Then i paused and realized many of the lines rhymed
Now folks, i don’t write rhyming pieces, or rather i don’t post rhyming pieces. I write them but i always toss them aside because i think mine are cheesy. i have a great admiration for folks that write excellent rhyming pieces because i think it’s hard not to sacrifice the write for a word or a rhythm.
Having said all that, i’m posting this, my first real rhyming poem. lol
and if it bothers you that i pray those particular words, (because i really do) then you might want to read this write as it explains how i feel about that

Walking through the tiled halls
Opening doors to needy minds
And looming contraptions on the walls
I recite the mantra everyday
Scanning vital signs and charts
As I waltz through this medical life
Of stethoscopes and sharps
I’m greeted by winces and afflicted eyes
As I coax trust from pain guarded
I use my voice to soften the edges
Of pride and modesty discarded
Trying to listen between the words
I span the abyss of hope and fear
They are always scared of what’s unsaid
In these sterile rooms of tears
I smile and tease and talk their language
With kindness as a crutch
I watch them yield on papered tables
Submitting to my touch
That faith they give is a precious entity
To think, they rely on my expertise,
It overwhelms my heart and mind
In this world of disorder and disease
(Sigh), I pause and look above
With my hand reaching for the door
I take this seriously, don’t let me fuck up
To the heavens, I implore
Trenchtownrock
This piece shows how you have your head in the right spot..love the honesty of the poem and how you just let it flowed naturally..that is the best type of writing…the ones that comes from that special place deep within..good work.
rubyjo replied
ah, thanks Trenchtownrock, i knew the feelings i wanted to convey but wasn’t so sure about the composition. I appreciate the positive comment :)
Garth Smith
I like this a lot rubyjo.
Its from the heart, its honest, and it hits many a nail on the head throughout. From the fears & insecurity of the patients, to the fears and value of the nursing and medical profession.
A signwriter fucks up and he draws outside the line and passersby snigger, a garbage collector fucks up and the guys have a laugh at him cleaning up the can and the mess.
A nurse or a doctor fucks up and someone dies.
Not only do they have to live with that but the world wants to throw the book at them when they do.
Nurses have my utmost respect.
Thank you.
rubyjo replied
Garth, i love this comment! and believe me, when we mess up it is a horrible feeling, quite mindbending to be exact, as well as being physically sick about it. We are humans working on humans and therefore there are bound to be errors somewhere along the line. One just can never be complacent about our responsibilities. Thanks for the “utmost respect” :)
Shoaib .
i feel this deep in my heart…
much loveeeeeeeeeee to ya rubyjo !!!!
rubyjo replied
i know you do Shoaib, much love right back! :)

I think the prayer is absolutely perfect, humble, and heartfelt. This is truly a masterpiece – and that’s coming from an older woman whose day job is church related – lol. I can think of no more honest prayer from someone in the medical field than please Lord don’t let me fuck up. Every stanza of this amazing poem sings with compassion, hope, love for what you do, and the humility that truly great doctors, nurses, teachers, lawyers etc. must have – for in the end it isn’t always up to us – we need a bit of help from above. Absolutely remarkable!
rubyjo replied
oh wow lianne, what a great comment, and it is an honest prayer and i’m the first to say it is not in my hands…
your choice of adjectives made my day, thank you :)

I think it’s wonderful. Nothing seems forced in your wording and you kept the voice completely your own. I’m impressed.
rubyjo replied
Impressing you with a poem, that makes me smile…
Thanks Cassidy, that means a lot :)
Isa Rodriguez
this one poem has made me in touch with how you love people and see them in their pain and realize how vulnerable we are and how much faith we need just going through our days..
i really love this prayer!!..
how kind you are to :
Trying to listen between the words
I span the abyss of hope and fear
They are always scared of what’s unsaid
In these sterile rooms of tears
rubyjo replied
Thank you for your kind words Isa darling
i try to see things from the patients perspective, otherwise its easy to get caught up in medical jargon and become complacent, i never want to do that.
Your words here made me smile.

BRILLIANT RUBYJO!! YOURS IS OFTEN A THANKLESS JOB!! BUT I’M SURE YOU DON’T DO IT FOR PRAISE OR THE MONEY!! XO
rubyjo replied

Gemini
((((hugs))))
rubyjo replied
oh i’ll take those hugs, yay!!
i love my work, and most of all i love the patients. i actually had the opportunity to continue up the corporate ladder at the hospital, but it took me further away from the patients, and the patients are the fun part of the job, so i changed my career path so i could keep patient contact. and i haven’t regretted it at all.
awdigitaldreams
your words took me to your world – I say that mantra lots LOL! xoxox
rubyjo replied
haha, that mantra works!
thanks darling, i was hoping to pull you into my world a little :)

I absolutely LOVE this!!! I believe I may have repeated that same prayer several times for different reasons. : )) You have a beautiful soul to sense and care so deeply deeply about others. Truly, this is quite moving and well expressed.. love, shar xoxoxo

rubyjo replied
haha, so who’s your fucking word police? (sorry, i had to work that in there :)

thanks, Mister AmazingGuy
CLiPiCs
now you got me scared Ruby
I used to utter the same mantra on tour, but lying in a bed and seeing the medic heading my way, all cool and professional, I always think, Yeah, now I will be alright
but bloody hell if I had known you medics have hte same fears as me, and could fuck up !
I am never going back into hospital again
Joking aside, I have nothing but respect for anyone in the medical profession, to give so much all day every day must be very wearing and at the same time so rewarding
keep the mantra going, it seems to work :-)
Love ‘N’ Laughter Kriss ♥
rubyjo replied
haha, thanks Kriss, yes we do have the same fears and uncertainties. Unfortunately people do not come with an owners manual and we can’t order parts from the local parts store and have it delivered by Tuesday. On top of that, every person is made different and responds differently to treatment. And they don’t read the damn medical books so they don’t know what to tell us when they come in, we have to play the detective.
But thanks for the repsect for the profession, it is much appreciated.
rubyjo replied
i realized that without the smiley face at the end, my reply sounded a bit sarcastic
so her is the official smiley face :))))
Pete Costick
Oh Ruby, wow, for several reasons, well, loads of reasons really, but I’ll name just a few.
First; the subject, feeling and heartfelt sentiment portrayed by your fine words, of what good people like yourself go through every working day of your lives.
On a lighter note; OK, I have been absent around these pages for a while, but I’m so glad I returned here today to find my friend Ruby has posted in rhyme :)
Really excellent work Ruby, love this for may reasons :)
rubyjo replied
Pete!! yay!
you and i have discussed rhyming poems in the past, and i will say you were on my mind as i worked on this piece. You had told me how much you enjoyed working out particular words and such to make it all gel. I remembered those conversations as i struggled with parts of this write and It turned my frustrations into challenges. Thank you for that.
And thank you for your kind words above, it’s good to see you around again :)
Bruce Miller
Oh yes! A perfect compliment to my poem. I would love to see them displayed together. It’s a perfect match. The caregiver and the patient. Equally passionate counterpoint!!!!!!!!!!!! Bravo. I’d love to colaborate.
rubyjo replied
oooooh, what a cool idea
ideas on how to do that?
Bruce Miller
Perhaps I could change the name to “Application”
