When I first reviewed all the wonderful work coming in to inspire us for SoJie19, I had one of those instant connections with Elizabeth Bravo’s “Old Man Walking”.
I can’t work to order so I delayed committing myself and carried on working on my current series of canvases one I had already developed into a montage of two images, which included a walking man with a hat silhouette. I just decided on impulse last weekend to talk to Elizabeth and then see where it would I had this initial idea of putting the image into the original canvas and played around on my iPad with it. I think I tried several times, I have include one version here. It has since been removed although there is a trace still in my imagination. The key was the iPad cropped version which instantly said,“Paint Me!”. 72 hours later the finished version, slight differences from the concept piece and more reflective now than nostalgic. I keep thinking it is me walking out of the painting and I’m passing an echo of myself in another time. The painting was done in in acrylic with palette knife and finished in oil and brush using stand oil to get greater transparency to the glazes. I wanted to try and use the qualities of colour from both systems.
Elizabeth’s “Old Man Walking” had line and shape, that frozen moment and hint of being off balance that I like, even the fragile line of the pavement seemed to be an echo of the movement of the figure, another trigger to engage in the work and for my imagination to translate into my own piece.
