Botticelli’s Venus’s are either about beauty or about the importance of women in the cycle of life. in the Primavera she is Venus Madonna blessing the union between men and women. I photographed a “Guess” add on Lucca station and have been atttracted to it ever since. Partly, because the angle of the head and the gesture of her hand is pure Botticelli Venus. So I have an image that is ambiguious. On the one hand it is spiritual and religious on another it is about ideal beauty. On this occasion I created a montage with an actual Madonna found in a sacred niche.

This is a montage using varnished inkjet transfers and watercolour with Fine-liner drawing, there are also collage elements, trainitalia tickets and monoprinted textures. The ground is Langton rough water colour paper 130lb and the work is finished in Cotman watercolours.

    Very creative, Richard!

  • I think sacred niches or secret places may develop at sometime in the future.
