A gorgeous frilly iris, the petals are unusual colours – the butterscotch standards have a violet spine, and the falls are a beautiful violet and blue, all set off with an orange beard.

This started out as a quick sketch to immortalise a single flower which had snapped from its stem and took less than 15 minutes, but it turned out much better than I expected!

Watercolours on a scrap of Fabriano Artistico extra white paper, the original measures 7″ × 14″ but is cropped to fit greeting cards.

I have a passion for watercolours and love to play with colour, exploring the effect of combining pigment and water on the paper. Challenging the traditional view that watercolours are pale and washy, I love vibrant colour used in exciting combinations. I am especially drawn to flowers, their three dimensional forms presenting endless challenges.

I won the SAA Amateur Artist of the Year 2012 for my painting “Cosmic Poppies”.

Itsn’t it amazing what the right stroke in the right place can do for a piece of art?? You’re really an inspiration….

  • Thank you so much Barb, a lot of it is luck I think, I rarely know why I’m laying a particular colour in a particular place at that time….. does that make sense?
