Surrounded by snow and icy temperatures I returned to an old favourite which always cheers me up at this time of year – tulips!
I took a series of photographs of these pink tulips, this is the second painting I’ve done from them.
Watercolour on Fabriano Artistico extra white cold pressed paper, with a mixture of paints including W&N, Daler Rowney, M Graham and Daniel Smith. The original work is approximately 12 × 10 inches.

I have a passion for watercolours and love to play with colour, exploring the effect of combining pigment and water on the paper. Challenging the traditional view that watercolours are pale and washy, I love vibrant colour used in exciting combinations. I am especially drawn to flowers, their three dimensional forms presenting endless challenges.
I won the SAA Amateur Artist of the Year 2012 for my painting “Cosmic Poppies”.
