This young Silver Eye was found after it had collided with a window. I placed it on the rail and it came round after about fifteen minutes and flew away.

Location – My garden, Paihia, Bay of Islands, New Zealand.

Lovely capture Roy .. I hate it when they fly into windows like that ~ so glad this one was able to fly off unharmed :)

  • Thank you Susie ! Yes, so do we and it happens quite a bit here as the native bush is huge and the reflections really show in the ranchslider making them think they are flying into trees.

What a sweet little thing, well captured (and rescued)

  • Many thanks Kala – we were so pleased it was still alive as that’s not always the case. If they have been feeding on the lard bag they have such short distance to fly to the window they are only stunned ! It’s the ones who come in for a feed, they sometimes get frightened off by a bigger bird and fly right past at speed
and straight into the glass that aren’t always so lucky !

These little creatures are endlessly photogenic, & this is a great catch! Nothing like a stunned subject, I always say. Yesterday a chickadee ran into our dining room window (a rare occurrence ~ they are so agile!), but she never paused or missed a beat. Just flew back to the bush, then back to the feeder. I have, however, encountered blue jays & northern cardinals that have banged into trees & windows (especially in very cold weather). All have recovered, but I have taken advantage of the situation to handle them ~ spread out their wings & tails to study their indescribable beauty! Warmed them up a bit & let them go, always with good results. Glad that this wee sweetheart made a comeback.

  • Thank you Sheila – since we put the food out we have had far less fatalities because they are usually at a slower speed. One not so lucky was a Shining Cuckoo – they fly all the way from New Guinea to nest, this one had only just arrived early in their season. Such a shame, all that way for nothing !
