This beautiful old Morton Bay Fig tree is on the waterfront road of Russell – It was planted in 1870. The old house behind was the original Police Station and it has been kept in pristine condition like so many other houses along the waterfront.

  • Thank you very much Jeremy – I love this house too ! There are quite a few houses like this still in Russell and the old church still has bullet holes visible from the Maori Wars.

A beautifully created photo of a grand old property Roy. It never ceases to amaze me how alike Australia and New Zealand can be at times because this could quite easily have been taken in a town about 300 k’s north of us called Dongara – in fact had you said Dongara I would have believed you, and I know the place well!
    Very well taken Roy.

  • Many thanks Peter – you have to remember that a lot of early settlers came here from Australia or went from here to Oz. In my family history, great uncles in the 1850’s went from the Lake District of UK to Oz. They didn’t like Oz so came to NZ. Half of them decided that Oz was better than NZ so went back to Oz again ! Heather’s rellies went to Oz from Ireland, made money in the gold fields north of Melbourne then came over to NZ and brought in sixty horses, started up a carting business in the Otago gold rush and made more money. Unfortunately, they had spent most of it by the time I met Heather…….lol !
Heather’s lot brought some of the first horses to NZ other than the military ones.

Beautiful scene and capture Roy ~ wish times were so simple now to see police stations like this one!

  • Thank you very much Susie – talking about Police Stations, on the Chatham Islands off the coast of the South Island NZ, the Police lock-up, up until the 1950’s was inside a hollow tree. They just placed a steel grill across the opening. Obviously it was a low crime area !
