Russell – formerly known as Okiato, was proclaimed the first capital of New Zealand in 1840. Governor Hobson was reluctant to name it the capital due to the fact that it had the reputation as being the ’ Hell Hole of the Pacific.’ The original settled village of Kororareka, five k’s south of Okiata was incorporated into the name of Russell a few years later. The name ’ Hell Hole of the Pacific ’ was well deserved as apart from being the main port of the time, it was the base for many whaling vessels to re-supply and crews took advantage of this stay in port to carouse and enjoy themselves.
From the photo you can see Paihia across the water.

Nice shot Ray and this little lighter green one on the left is just perfect for the touch of colour variations ;-) – Jeremy

  • Thank you for your kind comments and favourite Jeremy. This RAW image just had a tweak. The overall image was darkened slightly to bring up the bush. Lightness used a fraction to highlight the lighter areas.
The bright coloured fern is our native Ponga and grows quite tall.
