We took our two grandchildren across to Russell from Opua near where we live in Paihia, Bay of Islands, New Zealand.
Hundreds of tourists a year would use this method of reaching Russell. The alternative is miles of rough, narrow unsealed roads or the pedestrian ferry
from Paihia. In the background, alongside Opua’s wharf is Fuller’s Ferries new catamaran which does overnight trips around the Bay of Islands. The day we used the vehicular ferry it was being operated by the all-female crew who do an excellent job.
Up until the 1980’s Opua was a commercial port, the smaller cruise ships and cargo vessels would berth here.
