Pohutukawa - just hanging on........! by

This Pohutukawa hangs precariously by it’s roots to the cliff face. I wanted this tree in full flower but a storm was due so I took the photograph the day before. Lucky that I did as it lost most of its blooms.

Great timing, Roy. Not to mention great shot of a remarkable scene. So striking… glad you got it!

  • Thank you kindly Sheila – appreciate your great comment and favourite. Each year I wonder if it will hang in there but it’s been there for a few hundred years so I suppose it will be there for a few more….!

Terrific shot Roy … glad you caught some of the blooms before the storm but the roots are what fascinate me ~ isn’t nature terrific!

  • I so agree with you Susie – there are quite a few of these trees on the foreshore which have fantastic root systems. Thank you for your lovely comment.

I didn’t realize they lived as long as that Roy, bit like our ubiquitous Eucalyptus, 4 Red Gums in our paddocks must have been here well over 200 years. They say that when you link arms around the trunk of the tree you can tell how many years old by how many adults it takes to meet around the other side. Yep we tried it when we first bought the place. I often wonder what stories they could tell us about the people who were here before. Some of the old fencing we pulled out was very old.

  • Yes, I quite agree with you Rita. Our Pohutukawa were around when the Maori arrived in their Waka’s.
I would also love to know what tales they are keeping !
