FOR THE TUI’S BIRDSONG PLEASE FOLLOW ARTWHIZ47’s LINK ON HER COMMENT BELOW.

This Tui, one of New Zealand’s finest songbirds is the undisputed King of part of the forest bordering our garden in Paihia, Bay of Islands, New Zealand.
This Gent and his Wife rule their patch and no other bird will dispute this !
It is approaching the time when these Tui’s will be nesting and their tree will be a definite ’ No Go ’ zone until their chicks have left the nest. The male has started to use the new feeding station I have provided for all the birds. He doesn’t just drink from the sugar water, yesterday he was seen eating the half apple. It is lovely to hear the two of them singing to each other as their tree is only a few metres from our back deck.

Panasonic, LUMIX – GH2 at 300mm, 100×300 lens, 1/400, f/5.6, iso 1250. manual. From a single RAW image.

Beautiful bird and capture Roy … how lovely to have a nesting pair for you to watch … I will try googling a sound bite of their birdsong now :)

  • Thank you so much Susie. They flit in and out all the time while calling to each other. We can’t actually see their nest due to the dense foliage of the tree. For bird song, check out Sheila’s second reply below ( artwhiz47) and follow her link.

This birdie is such a treat (as he watches The Birdie), & I still want that collar! And what a setting. Splendid, Roy.

  • Many thanks Sheila – your comments are much appreciated. Yes, that ruff in front and the swirly bit round his neck is so distinctive.

I just found a YouTube video (actually, there are several) of this beautiful creature in action. One of the longest & best (in my opinion) can be found here.

  • Sheila, thank you for that link – terrific ! Shame about our noisy vehicles in the background. That clip was taken just down the road from us. I have taken the liberty of directing people to your link in the main write-up.

  • Thank you so much Colin – so pleased you have found the link and now know how beautifully they sing.
We sit on our deck with a chateau von Cardboard in the evening and just listen to them, all day if we have the time.

  • Many thanks Myra for your lovely comment and favourite. The pair are starting to use the sugar water but are still quite flighty if we are around.
