The New Zealand Pigeon (Kereru) is a large hansome bird bigger than the English Wood Pigoen and found widespread througout New Zealand in forested areas, also seen in open country when feeding on a wide range of fruits, seeds, flowers and foliage of native and exotic plants.
They are important agents in dispersing seed from many plants, especially seeds from podocarp trees.
Location – my cherry tree at Paihia, Bay of Islands, New Zealand.

He certainly is handsome! This is a fantastic capture, Roy – perfect background too :-)

  • Thank you Trish for the kind comment and favourite. The Cherry trees are in front of where our forest starts, right at our back deck.

Can’t (wouldn’t) argue with this fellow. He stands out, stands alone & generally makes his case. Thanks to you & your good eye, I’d say.

  • Sheila, Thank you, yes he is big all right and has a lady friend with him today.

I am at war with wood pidgeons!!!! We get so many and they empty, then wreck the bird feeders so there is nothing left for other smaller birds. Love the colours you have captured here Roy.

  • Thank you so much Colin, he hit the window the other day by the bird feeder so is keeping well clear and him self and his lady friend stay in the cherry tree.
