This photograph was taken at Waitangi on Waitangi Day in 2011. This occurs on 6th February every year in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand to commemorate the signing of the Treaty by Queen Victoria’s representatives and most of the Maori Tribes. These warriors were performing a Haka, having just landed from a mass fleet of Waka’s ( canoes ) to start the proceedings for the day.
Haka – the Maori Haka is a composition of the whole body and can have various meanings such as a challenge, a welcome, exultation or defiance. The Haka done by sporting teams represents a challenge to the opposition.
Most famously, at the beginning of All Black rugby matches against another country.
