This photograph was taken at Waitangi on Waitangi Day in 2011. This occurs on 6th February every year in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand to commemorate the signing of the Treaty by Queen Victoria’s representatives and most of the Maori Tribes. These warriors were performing a Haka, having just landed from a mass fleet of Waka’s ( canoes ) to start the proceedings for the day.
Haka – the Maori Haka is a composition of the whole body and can have various meanings such as a challenge, a welcome, exultation or defiance. The Haka done by sporting teams represents a challenge to the opposition.
Most famously, at the beginning of All Black rugby matches against another country.

and his answer was… To Bloody Cold, Aye…..
    .
Way to go Bro. I love the title.

l ’ve watched these at Rugby matches on tv, they look quite fearsome, nice info Roy, must be amazing to see them in the canoes xx

  • Lynn, if I don’t see the Haka before an international rugby match it’s not the same. A couple of years back the English rugby coach tried to get the Haka banned, saying it gave NZ an advantage so a well known NZ sport newspaper reporter said we were more than willing to let the English do a Morris Dance before the game……ha ha ! Yes, the Waka’s are awesome when there are about twenty of them and the big one has 100 paddlers.

And there was me thinking that your mate had taken this of you when Heather told you that you had to cut the grass and sweep the drive. Oh dear, how wrong can one be. Your story of the Haka brings back many memories of watching matches when Wales, occasionaly beat NZ in Cardiff. Cheers Roy.

  • Thank you Tony – my God, Wales beating NZ, that must have been in the days of black & white TV or when Graham Henry, Steve Hansen or Warren Gatland ( current ) were coaching Wales, all good NZ’s………Lol ! As far as cutting the grass, we ain’t got none – it’s all forest round here and as for sweeping the drive, that’s Heather’s job, I’ve just bought her a new broom – when she’s not sweeping she’s flying the broom around the neighbourhood – Ouch, Heather – she’s just hit me with the broom !
