Title borrowed from John Denver’s famous song.
Another from Great Barrier Island New Zealand series – this is the main road on the Island and we are at the top of the hill heading south from Port Fitzroy. It looks like Heather has gone and left me at the side of the road as that’s our 4 × 4 Toyota Hilux disappearing round the corner…..lol ! As the picture shows, the road was gravel but has now been sealed. Even now, the roads are still quite precarious and very narrow with a steep drop on one side and a high cliff on the other. In the days before seal you could usually tell a local Barrier vehicle – the left hand front mudguard was often damaged as the rule of the road was – if you met a vehicle on a blind corner the vehicle on the inside dropped into the water table ( ditch ) to avoid a collision. Sealed roads have meant more traffic as now quite often, tourists bring their own vehicles to the Island via vehicular ferry.

Super viewing my friend! Colorado has roads like the one in your photo – my wife also is 5’ tall and we have been marred for 49 years – 50 next year. Would love to move to your area! Oh well The Good Lord Knows! Have a super week – end my friend! Tony

  • Thank you kindly Tony – touche! We also have our fiftieth next year in April. We have a lot of Americans and Canadians and Brits come here for 4/6 months of the year to escape the northern winter.

Great lead in line with the road but a long way from West Virginia.

  • Many thanks Colin – not all that far, you only have to go over the edge and you’ll be going west raplidly…..lol !

Great capture and narrative Roy … I can fully identify with those unpaved roads having driven the Alcan twice before they paved the Canadian side ~ something like 1100 miles of bumping along with only relief when going over a bridge ha ha ~ my VW bug had to have more than one set of shocks replaced over time ~ ha ha!

Great shot and info Roy. Doesn’t look too safe. Bet Heather as having kittens.
Than John Denver song will be in my head for the res of the day.

  • Thanks very much Myra for your comment and favourite. Actually Heather quite liked these roads, she’d drive the big 4 × 4 the eleven k’s over to the Doctor’s quite regularly. She did require a cushion to see over the bonnet though….lol !
