This is not as close as it looks – still, you had to watch these big barges when they came past. They didn’t slow down or move over because of the narrow channel, they expected you to move and quite rightly so. This photograph was taken on the tidal River Trent in 2007 while on our way to Torksey Lock, the Foss Dyke canal and River Witham in Lincolnshire while on a five week trip on the narrowboat ’ Skye. ’ We did the northern rivers and canals in England that year.
We heard through the grapevine that three weeks after this photograph was taken this barge ’ Battlestone ’ rammed and sank a narrowboat.
