In October 2010 the container ship ’ Rena ’ slammed into the Astrolobe Reef doing seventeen knots. This was not far from the entrance to the Port of Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty, North Island, New Zealand.
The unsung hero in the title is not the cruise ship ’ Dawn Princess but the little bunker ( re-fueling ) barge ’ Awanuia ’ which is pictured alongside the ’ Dawn Princess.’ The ’ Awanuia ’ spent weeks removing most of the seventeen hundred tonnes of bunker oil and two hundred tonnes of diesel oli from the ’ Rena.’ This necessitated her travelling backwards and forwards between the wreck and Taurangi Harbour where she would discharge the oil and head back out again. At one stage she damaged her bow while trying to re-moor just off the stern of the ’ Rena ’ in large swells.
As I write this article the remains of the ’ Rena ’ is being hit with seven metre swells. The only part remaining above water now is the bow and part of the foredeck.
This is now classed as New Zealand’s worst environmental maritime disaster ever.

What a terrible thing to happy, hope Awanuia helped to limit the damage xx
Thank you very much Lynn, Awanuia and her crew certainly did a great job ! Everything came together reasonably well – it could have been a lot worse. The weather was kind for the first four days while the politicians got their act into gear and the overseas salvage experts who had to come from all over the world were indeed first class !

What a great shot & a wonderful capture of the little hero ! ..The story of the Rena & the damage it caused is horrendous , but could have been worse if not for the ’Awanula ’… Great info here Roy – Love this shot too xx
Many thanks Gail – we have followed this tragedy since the day it happened – the ship was taking a short cut to reach the Pilot station on time, apparently it would have cost them $6000 to wait for the next tide instead of costing millions and so much damage to the ecology !

Fabulous shot of this floating luxury hotel.
Thank you Gary although it was the little bunker barge that was the focus. We had friends on the ’ Dawn Princess ’ that’s why we were there.

I keep trying to tell Kate, true heroes come in small packages. Superb capture and info Roy.
Thank you so much Colin – yes, it’s the big wigs who get the gongs and the little fella who get the
dongs ……….lol ! Check my reply to Gail for the reason this happened.
