MASSED PIPE BANDS - EDINBURGH TATTOO..............! by Roy Massicks

We attended the Edinburgh Tattoo in 1997 while on my wife’s first visit to UK and Europe. When I married her I always promised her i’d show her the world – didn’t know it would take 35 yrs and cost so much….lol !
This was one of the highlights of our overseas trips from new Zealand. The photograph shows the finale with massed bands from most of the Commonwealth countries including the New Zealand Police Pipe Band, the Gurkha Regiment plus many others. It was a magnificent, magical spectacle especially as can be seen, the mist began to swirl in over the battlements giving the most amazing atmosphere. Ten minutes after this photo was taken and the bands had march off, the lone Piper stood on the battlements playing to a completely hushed crowd ! Fantastic ! Never seen anything like it before or since.

A bit of a coincidence because our only return visit to the UK was in 1997. We never got to Edinburgh though, but I make a point of watching the tattoo every year on our TV. What an experience that would have been for you and what a fantastic photo you got here. Would be interesting to see whether digitial would have done so well! Your description is great and I can tell you are still there in your memory of it all.

  • Thank you kindly Peter – we often think of that fantastic night. My wife grew up with bagpipes so it was extra special for her.

It certainly an unforgettable experience Roy.It was a lifetime experience for me.I had wanted tosee it fromthe time I startedlaying pipes as a 12 year old. There is nothing like the feeling of being in the mased bands. As a competition piper it was our practice to swap with Drummers for the Massed Bands at the end of competition. There were some very funny times when we won and needed to play off at the end.Great memories.Loved the Tattoo when we were there in 2007 and Were lucky enough to be at the final performance.Brilliant.Great capture mate.

  • Most interesting reply Neil. As a sassenach I am a bit odd because I love the bagpipes and my wife learned and won quite a few medals for Highland Dancing. She grew up with pipers in the family and they would often play for her to practice and she also competed with a piper on the stage. She rekons she can never hear enough of bagpipes and when she does hear them her feet start to twitch ! At the Tattoo I had to tie her to her seat ! The next time we came to Scotland we were in a Cabaret in Oban and the entertainment was a dancer accompanied by the then World Champion piper in 2007. He was great but the dancer was a bit glum and didn’t appear to be enjoying it. My brother-in-law and I tried to set my wife up by telling the emcee that there was a NZ champion dancer in the audience and she would probably dance if asked ! Her comment was ’ Health and safely wouldn’t allow an audience member to participate ’ and anyway my wife would have killed me if she had known. She hasn’t danced for about fifty years so it probably would have killed her too……lol ! It was a fun night though !
