The ’ Dawn Princess ’ leaving Auckland, New Zealand with a full moon to guide her on its way. The photograph was taken from my sons home in Torbay, Auckland, and the rugged and isolated hills in the background are the Coromandel Ranges.
This was on my 70th birthday and my good friend and his wife were on the ’ Dawn Princess ’ continuing their cruise before heading home to Australia. His 71st was the day after mine so on my day we spent a delightful few hours with them. Incidentally, fifty years ago both my friend and myself would have been passing this very spot as AB’s ( able seamen ) on the Shaw Saville Lines cargo/liner ’ Gothic ’ homeward bound to the UK. Me to arrange my permanent emigration to NZ, my friend to continue his seafaring career for a further year or two.
