This delightful village is on the Atlantic coast of North Devon. Vehicles are not permitted into the village but goods etc are carted by donkeys towing sleds down the tiny cobbled lanes. These are quite steep in some parts but make for enjoyable walking. For those unable ( or too lazy) a Landrover transports people from the top down to the beach by means of a perimeter road.
Some of these villages and small towns in Devon and Cornwall are privately owned by families going back many centuries.

Wonderful image Roy and great perspective. Love those stone walls.

  • It is the most fascinating place Andrea – we couldn’t get enough of it ! Thank you for your kind comments.

Excellent photo Roy and you look as though you were down on the pebbles and not up on the wall. We were last there in 1997 and I was amused by the guy delivering milk to the various cottages on a sled. He would grab a bottle and just walk straight in to the house. On one occasion he was in there for quite a long time and we did wonder!! LOL But it was the sled that held my attention because it just slid on down to the next place without any work on his part other than a slight push. I can also remember being there before the war and my dad let me ride back up on a donkey! Wonderful memories – but on that last visit we were charged two pounds to enter the village!

  • Peter, we honestly can’t remember being charged but it’s quite possible and yes, I was on the pebbles taking the photo. Thank you for your comments, much appreciated.

Wonderful capture Roy and interesting reading.

  • Many thanks Myra – would love to go back but it’s so expensive now in Britain I doubt we’ll go again. Just to the left of the photo, out of the picture is a small waterfall that drops straight down to the beach.

Haven’t been there in decades; hasn’t changed a bit! Great shot, Roy.

  • Thank you Sheila – it was 2000 when we were there. Peter says they now charge two quid a visit !
