Tui........clear off, this is my patch ! by

Please view large.

The Tui, also known as the Parson Bird due to the white ruff at his throat. A beautiful songbird – but yesterday when I took this photo he was telling me to ’ clear off !’ and as I have been chasing him for two years with my camera I wasn’t going anywhere until I had a satisfactory photo.

Taken from the balcony outside the bedroom window of our house at Paihia, Bay of Islands, New Zealand. The season’s have gone all haywire – we are mid winter and the Taiwanese Cherry trees are flowering already. They love the nectar from the blossoms.

Fuji HS10 at 435mm, 1/25, f/8, iso 400, Mode: Manual, Tripod, slightly cropped.
Single RAW image.

Beautiful image and well done in capturing your reluctant bird friend. I know too the joys of trying to get a good photo of a frequent visitor to my garden. He calls to me and then mocks me as he flys away as soon as he sees the camera! Congrats on your feature :))

  • Thank you very much Karen, this stroppy bird sits in a very large Totara tree just to the right of this cherry tree and sees off all comers while keeping a look out over his territory. I have to be very sneaky to catch him. The camera is set on a tripod just inside the window.

Great photo Roy, his tetchy mood really comes across in this.

  • Many thanks Dan, I appreciate your comments and yes, they are known as bossy birds.

This is exceptional Roy, what a brilliant capture. And I agree the weather has gone mad, our Rhododendrons are about to burst open too, yet we had a little snow today, the first really cold snap we have had all winter

  • Thank you very much Andrea – it’s been really cold here too, all of 13 deg c this morning ……lol !

You wouldn’t want a peck of this bird hey Roy?
    Great capture.

  • Certainly not Gary – they can be quite nasty despite their good looks ! We have Indian Mynah’s here who are the gangsters of the bird world but the Tui even sees them off. Thank you for your kine comments, appreciate them. Roy

Let’s hope for both the bird and your sake that you are satisfied. You could really make him paranoid by setting up cameras all around the yard! LOL. Terrific capture, love the budding tree and the glimpses of the greenish coloring on the feathers. Sandy

  • Thank you for your comments Sandy – I can’t leave him alone as he talks to me in a lovely sing-song voice….lol ! I still haven’t captured what I really want, if I get the pose I want the light isn’t shining on his irridescent coat or the light is right and the little blighter won’t pose ! Roy
