Rose Cottage is situated in the small village of Finsthwaite in the southern part of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England.
My fifth great-grandfather William Massicks bought Rose Cottage in 1758 for the sum of forty seven pounds five shillings, having previously held a mortgage on it for eleven pounds. The property described at the time as a messuage (dwelling house and outbuildings) consisting of an orchard, garden and one dale (wood) of pasture called ’ Black Beck Mires.’
He left the property to his eldest son Thomas when he died in 1790.
Black Beck Mires would have been quite useful to William as his occupation was Farmer and Charcoal Burner.
