This is the R Tucker Thompson, a gaff rigged schooner built in New Zealand in 1985 in the exact method of the original schooners.
She does regular day trips with passengers as well as sail training for groups around the Bay of Islands in New Zealand.
This photograph was taken at Motuarohia (Roberton) Island in the Bay of Islands.
That is a ’ scull and crossbones ’ flying at the masthead. In my days at sea it was an offence to fly that flag but it seems to be quite common these days, especially if you live around Somalia !

Great capture Roy and lovely write up, I am learning so much about NZ.

  • Likewise Andrea – we are learning things about the South Island we didn’t know. Thank you for your kind comments.
