This young dove is part of a family group which appeared in our garden. Originating from Africa they come in a variety of colours ranging from white, grey to creamy fawn and in some cases almost an orangy tinge to the more common grey pigeon colour. Mature birds have a black ring round the back of their neck, hence the name.
The cooing of this family does take me back to my origins in England where this sound was common.
These birds coo from dawn to late evening so this could be another reason people use the expression
’ I’ll RING that birds NECK! ’ although I find the sound restful.
